This is how the author himself described this masterpiece: "I have a canvas with cypress, ears of wheat and poppies under a blue sky that looks like a Scottish plaid; I painted it with a thick impasto, like Monticelli's, and the wheat field was painted also thick to show the intense heat."

Van Gogh considered this sun-drenched landscape one of his own best paintings of the summer and reproduced this composition three times: the first drawing was done with a pen, the other two canvases were painted in oils.
